Progress (and more philosophy!)

Not much time for sketching this week. Well, plenty of sketching out written ideas for clients, but little of the pencil variety. Instead I share with you some progress made on the wonky-eyed wench I submitted for Sunday Sketches last week.

Well, as you can see, she's no longer a sketch! She's levelled herself off a bit now too - although she teetered a bit this way and that before she settled (probably the wine)... She also kept up the philosophy chit chat which was an unusual experience. I mean, I'm used to my paintings talking to me - mostly moaning that the paintbrush is tickling them or that their clothes don't quite fit; but spouting Descartes' "I think; therefore I am" and discussing the geometrical proportions of the composition was truly something new!

While she was thinking, the wench also decided she's still far from done and still requires a certain je ne sais quoi (she's clearly been spending too much time reading French philosophers and needs to get out more!).

And so we will continue on her journey and apparent education. The aim of the exercise is to get her to turn up the other half her lip in a smile of satisfaction... We'll see!

I'm sharing with the Sunday Sketches again so see what they think of her 'improvements'.

  9. Wow - what a difference a week makes. I have to admit that I kind of was intrigued by her "take no prisoners" gaze last week, but I love her new softer side even more!

I really enjoyed reading your "inspiration" post too... You certainly know how to turn a phrase... Definitely inspirational :)

  13. I like her in both forms, but the more completed one is lovely. Love how you used the different colors, especially in the neck, as the shadows, or different colors values (or I'm sure there's a proper art term). I also like her nose, I feel like I can reach out and pinch it.

  19. Lisa ~ You asked about how I use an etching tool in my pieces - I use a metal stylus type tool with a ball on either end to etch details into the paper and then apply multiple layers of color over it to bring the details out. The details are left white, or maybe another color if I apply a light color first and then etch that, applying a darker color over the first one.

It's fun and not something I've seen before so it's nice to be doing something unique.

I think it would be fun to make a video of this technique to share with everyone.

  25. Her proportions are looking good now and she is lovely but I do miss that slight downward turn of the mouth in the original sketch. She had such a contemplative look in the sketch, and I was drawn to that.
